TITLE: Applying Systems Thinking to Complex Healthcare Problems: from patient safety incident investigation to healthcare AI innovation
Abstract: It is recognized that whole systems approaches are required, but underexploited, for safety improvement and innovation in healthcare. It is particularly important since any change without considering issues across the system could be counterproductive in healthcare. Dr Jun will talk about how systems approaches were applied in two research projects he led: the first one aimed to adopt systems thinking to patient safety investigation and the second one aimed to improve health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities by developing AI-enabled support for better joined-up health and social care.

Dr. Jun is a leader in socio-technical system design at the School of Design and Creative Arts, Loughborough University, UK and a chartered human factors specialist. He has been applying human-centred system design approached to a wide range of issues in the healthcare, public health, transportation and energy sectors. He has published a board range of articles in Safety Science, Applied Ergonomics, Ergonomics, International Journal for Quality in Healthcare, BMJ Open and has recently been involved in the publication of two books, Oxford Professional Practice: Handbook of Patient Safety (2022); THIS Institute’s Great big book of improving quality and safety in healthcare (2023). He also produced three animations and one short film to educate/promote systems thinking to wide range of audience.
